Course overview

  • Fall 2017
  • Location: OHSU main campus.
Tuesdays practice and review session in RJH 6524 (MMI area) from 2 -4pm (faculty present 2-3pm). Note that the presentation room, RJH 2324 will also be reserved for practice 2-4 pm on Tuesdays
Thursdays 1:30 to 3:30 (Presentations). EdComm will record presentations on Thursdays from 1:30-2:30. Evaluations and discussion 2:30-3:30 pm.

This is an advanced graduate course with an emphasis on the latest research from the primary literature along with in-depth presentation of the basic concepts of biochemistry and molecular biology. Faculty have selected journal articles that should require re-wrting the textbooks, if results prove to be valid.

This class is not a faculty-driven lecture class, but is based on student presentations of background material and research papers selected from the current literature. It is designed to maximize active roles for students in each class.

Goals of the Class

  1. Encourage students to seize every available resource for understanding scientific matter (e.g., Nature podcasts, social bookmarking, open science, faculty, each other)
  2. Use face-to-face mentoring with expert faculty in an area of recent groundbreaking science discovery.
  3. Get familiar with collaborative web-based tools (OWW and wiki, GitHub, Slack, OneNote)
  4. Create ambassadors for open science
  5. Improve presentation skills, both in form and scientific content
  6. Use presentation skills to formulate and practice an "elevator speech" to use in networking and professional activities
  7. Engage in active group-based learning
  8. Gain leadership and organizational experience
  9. Build a shared web resource for information obtained in the class
