  1. SB efforts in the EU
  2. artemisinin project
  3. BP project?
  4. Microsoft funding program
  5. Others?

• Sophia 18:22, 12 July 2007 (EDT): Does anyone remember who coined the phrase "Making life better, one part at a time"? I'd like to give credit.... And someone pointed out to me in conversation that it recalls DuPont's "Better Living Through Chemistry" and GE's "We Bring Good Things to Life."

Synthetic Biology is
A) the design and construction of new biological parts, devices, and systems, and
B) the re-design of existing, natural biological systems for useful purposes.

The Registry of Standard Biological Parts is a collection of standard biological parts or sequences of DNA with specified function. These parts can be physically composed to construct synthetic biological systems. The Registry maintains functional information on each part as well as a physical copy.

iGEM is the international genetically engineered machines competition. The objective of the competition is to design and build an engineered biological system using DNA. Systems will be constructed from standard biological parts. You can read more about the competition here or at the official iGEM wiki.

The BioBricks Foundation (BBF) is a not-for-profit organization founded by engineers and scientists from MIT, Harvard, and UCSF with significant experience in both non-profit and commercial biotechnology research. BBF encourages the development and responsible use of technologies based on BioBrick™ standard DNA parts that encode basic biological functions.

The Synthetic Biology Engineering Research Center (SynBERC) is a multi-institution research effort to lay the foundation for synthetic biology, which aims to build biological components and assemble them into integrated systems to accomplish specific tasks.

The Institute of Biological Engineering (IBE) is a professional organization which encourages inquiry and interest in biological engineering in the broadest and most liberal manner and promote the professional development of its members.
