Health Care Issue

Heart Conditions: Heart diseases include a variety of heart defects including arrhythmias or narrow blood vessels. Many heart conditions can lead to heart attacks, which cause oxygen to be cut off from the heart muscles. This causes the heart rate to slow down significantly (Mayo Clinic Staff, 2014). Irregular heart beats or slow heart rates can be detected using electrical signals.

Sleeping at the Wheel: Sleepiness at the wheel has recently been identified as a cause for 20% of highway crashes and it is especially a problem among occupational drivers (Philip, 2006). When the body falls asleep, or reaches a state close to sleep, the heart rate drops. A heart rate monitor that wakes up a driver who has fallen asleep at the wheel could help prevent many of these crashes.

Autism and Stress Management: Many autistic individuals suffer from meltdowns from overwhelming circumstances. These can result in loss of physical and verbal control. Generally, before a meltdown begins, the individual will show signs of anxiety, which includes an increased heart rate, and at this state, a meltdown can still be prevented (“Meltdowns,” 2016). Having a heart rate monitor that alerts a parent or caregiver when the heart rate of the autistic individual starts to rise could give them a chance to change the situation and possibly prevent a meltdown.

Heart Rate Targeting: Target heart rate training is a method used to improve performance and make sure the individual is not over-working their heart during exercise. Wearing a heart rate monitor that alerts you if your heart rate is getting too high or too low can help you exercise in a way that is targeted for you.

Fit-Bit Surge:

Advantages: Software remove outliers when calculating RHR, tracks exercise & steps, Gives this device an advantage because most smartwatches/fitness monitor do not remove outliers thus making it more accurate.

Disadvantages: When you do not wear the watch, the app will assume RHR is the same as the last time you were wearing it, does not contact emergency services. Does not identify a threshold within an individual’s health standards or notify emergency authorities when the threshold is exceeded.

Our device will be more marketable because we incorporate all of the advantages of the fitbit surge as well add a more accurate heart monitor. That monitor will be able to notify emergency services if needed.

Life-Alert:

Advantages: Contacts emergency services, easy to use, confirms with individual that emergency professionals are needed. Gives this device an advantage because most smart watches/health monitors do not notify emergency services when the user vitals reach a certain threshold.

Disadvantages: Need to be conscious and aware you need emergency attention. This is a disadvantage because the user may die due to inability to notify anyone because they are unconscious.

Our device will be more marketable because we will be able to notify proper emergency services whether a patient is conscious or not, as well monitor users’ exercise & steps.

Kito+

Advantages: Place hand on sensor and see graph of electrical activity of heart beating, good for monitoring an abnormal heart rhythm. This is an advantage because users can actually see if they have an abnormal heartbeat

Disadvantages: Can’t detect if patient has had a heart attack, does not track exercise & steps, not wearable item only work manually. Disadvantage because it can not detect if a patient has a heart attack or not, does not notify emergency services when user heart rate is fatal. Does not work automatically you have to hit a sensor to work, so may not detect when a person is having an emergency. Not being able to track steps or exercise make it less marketable to users.

Our device will be more marketable because it will be able to notify emergency services if user having a fatal heart rate, included health monitor like steps and exercising.

Heart Monitor

Advantages: Monitors and sends alerts to family when heart rate is dangerous. Detects falls automatically, but also offers a button if in trouble to press. Give this device an advantage because most smart watches/health monitors do not notify family when the user vitals reach a certain threshold The devices doesn’t need you to be alert and awake to contact your family for help.

Disadvantages: The system is unaesthetic. Also contacts family, so could take longer for help to be reached. Because we aren’t targetting only to the elderly, our target customers wouldn’t wear something quite so old looking. They care more about fashion and style. By only contacting the family, the system puts another step in between getting help. Time is crucial in an emergency and the faster a service can get there, the higher chance the person has of living.

Our device will be more marketable because our device will be more modern and sleek. It will also contact emergency services directly giving you a higher survival rate if your condition is life threatening. Our device will also be more versatile ranging from everyday use to helping those with heart conditions keep track of their heart rate to helping athletes train and reach a target heart rate.

IP Position

US20140288435A1: Heart Rate Data Collection: A circuit using a light detector for incoming light and generating an electrical signal from light received. That electrical signal is then converted to a voltage signal and a sample of the voltage signal is stored in consecutive time intervals. The voltage signal represents the heart rate of the person wearing it.

US20140288392A1: Wearable Heart Rate Monitor: Includes a motion sensor and photoplethysmographic (PPG) sensor. The PPG has a photodetector, a periodic light source, and circuitry that determines an individual’s heart rate from the output of the photodetector. Different aspects of the device allow it to work in a low power mode or a normal power state and allow it to measure multiple aspects of the heartbeat waveform.

US8180591B2: Portable Monitoring Devices and Methods of Operating Same: Simultaneously evaluates cardiovascular and body conditions. Includes a motion sensor, an altitude sensor, processor circuitry, and physical features adapted to a user.

US20140378787A1: Biometric Monitoring Device with Heart Rate Measurement Activated by Single User-Gesture: The device lets the user take or see heart rate by touching the device, moving it in a certain way, or clenching the fist. They can easily access their heart rate data without having to stop monitoring or interrupt usual activities.

US20090322513A1: Medical Emergency Alert System and Method: Utilizes a wearable monitoring device to keep track of health parameters. When measurements exceed average data for the individual, the device sends the data to a local emergency monitoring center. Includes GPS, as well as identification and medical history of the individual.
