Procedures

Make Exchanged Clay Films

  • THP Bromide Exchanged Clay:
    • Add 7mL of water to ~1.0 g PVA and ~0.11 g of THPB exchanged NaMT in a glass vial
    • Stir the solution with constant heating at 75C until the polymer is dissolved and the clay is dispersed (~15 minutes)
    • Cool the solution to room temperature
    • Add 0.5mL 0.8 wt% glutaraldehyde.
    • Stir for an additional 3 minutes to ensure homogeneity
    • Pour solution into a teflon dish to dry until the next class
  • Choline Chloride Exchanged Clay:
    • Add 7mL of water to ~1.0 g PVA and ~0.11 g of CC exchanged NaMT in a glass vial
    • See above

Column Preparation

  • Glass wool placed in the bottom, saturated with methanol, drained
  • ~3mL of sand added on top of the glass wool, saturated with methanol and then rinsed with water several times until liquid runs clear
  • 10 g silica gel slurried in methanol gently poured into column, rinsed twice with water
  • 10 mL BPA, let soak into the column
  • 10 mL water run through column, collected in 5 mL increments
  • 30 mL methanol run through column, collected in 5 mL increments
