Below is a summary of fields (or, more precisely, field/channel pairs) for which the mean readout is negative. The numbers q0-q4 represent the minimum, 1st quartile, median, 3rd quartile, and maximum readout values for the field/channel. The fact that q3 is negative in all cases suggests that the common cause for all the anomalies is an artefactually high background. JM confirmed this guess on a couple cases by direct visual inspection of the corresponding image files (20110421_184B5/GF2/E08/4/GF2_E08_4_w685.tif, 20100925_HCC1806/CK1/B07/1/CK1_B07_1_w685.tif). In both cases, regions of anomalously high intensity (from extraneous particles) in the 685 channel coincided with some of the pixels in the background mask (which is computed from the 460 channel, where the artefact does not show).

NB: these fields stood out for having negative intensities, but it is quite likely that the signal is artefactually low, even if still positive, due to an inappropriately high estimate of the background.
