People Directory

How can we best implement a directory for users to post basic information with their areas of research for collaboration, job searching, etc?

Discussion

  • Jennyn: I am very wiki-tech declined, so the only way I can personally create is a basic table with basic information about the user, a link to their OWW user profile, and any other information that seems pertinent to finding others in the field/location. If I were looking for someone at UT, I would simply use the Find function and search "UT". But, I know that there are much better methods out there, but I wanted to lay the least techy idea out there so that we can start thinking of the BEST way to implement this so that users can easily add their information quickly.
Feel free to edit the template all you want for more ideas.

  • Maybe one option is to use an existing web site which hosts user profiles. Then use an existing search engine, like http://people.wink.com which opened today. It searches for user profiles in LinkedIn, MySpace and Bebo. One simple thing could be to ask people to create a profile at one of those sites if they don't have one already. For OWW it would be cheap to implement and from the user's point of view it is reusable. --Martin 00:18, 10 November 2006 (EST)
