Note that this Training must be updated annually.

This training should be completed on your first day in lab and must be completed before you can start any bench work. The training takes approximately 30 minutes and consists of a walk through of the lab with the Safety Officer (Sean) in order to introduce you to the space you will be working in. Please schedule this training with Sean prior to your arrival. It will cover the following:

  1. No food, drink, smoking, makeup/Chapstick application in lab
  2. Appropriate Lab Clothing: no open-toed shoes, long pants, glasses with flame, coat to protect clothing for dishwashing and EtBr
  3. Keep door closed
  4. Emergency Contacts/Flip Charts/Green Sheets
  5. Dial 100 during an Emergency
  6. Personal Protective Equipment/
  7. Hazardous Chemicals
    • Hazards associated with Specific Chemicals we use
      • EtBr: use nitrile gloves, containment, disposal
    • Proper Disposal
      • Hazardous waste (Satellite Accumulation Area): gas, EtBr, alcohols
      • Sharps: tips, pipets, wooden sticks, blades, Eppis
      • Biological waste
        • liquid: add bleach to 10%
        • solid: autoclave bags
  8. Safety Equipment (Eyewash Stations, Showers, Spill Kits)
  9. MSDS and Introduction to Lab Reference Shelf (online too)
  10. Fume hood: keep closed and clear
  11. Gas bottles: use and disposal
  12. Autoclave Safety: loosen lids, hot steam, pressure, correct cycle, orange gloves
  13. BL2 Requirements
  14. Proper labeling of chemicals (date, initials, contents, few abbreviations, color)
  15. Emergency Evacuations/Fire Alarms/Meeting Location across street at Stata
  16. Fire Extinguishers/MIT’s policy is not to fight fires
  17. Location of First Aid Kit
  18. Review the EAP (Emergency Action Plan)
  19. Injury--report to PI

Good lab practice

  1. cleaning up
  2. borrowing things, sharing space
  3. recycling
  4. no gloves with computer/phone
  5. laminar flow hood use (UV!)
  6. centrifuges (balance, covering, changing rotors)
  7. keep one sink clean
  8. washing dishes in different sinks
  9. MQ and DI water
  10. tools
  11. microwave
  12. stocks
  13. stockroom
  14. upstairs: MQ, autoclave, ice, Speedvac
