Procedures
New Exfoliated Clay Film Synthesis
- Determine how much 4% exfoliated NaMT needed for 10% clay solution
- 0.11 g=(Mass of 4% NaMT soln needed)*0.04
- Mass of 4% NaMT soln needed=2.75 g
- 2.7613 g 4% NaMT added
- Add ~1g PVA
- Add 7 mL H2O
- Stir the solution with constant heating at 75C until the polymer is dissolved and the clay is dispersed (~15 minutes)
- Cool the solution to room temperature
- Add 0.5mL 0.8 wt% glutaraldehyde
- Stir for an additional 3 minutes to ensure homogeneity
- Pour solution into teflon dish to dry
Powder X-ray Diffraction Measurements
- Sample prep:
- Pat dry film soaked in 8 ppm malachite green solution
- Place film on pXRD disk
- Press tape over film to hold in place, using a razor to cut off excess
Stock Solution Preparation
- Make 200mL 200ppm
- 40 mg MG in 200 mL volumetric flask
- 80 ppm made by Eleni's group
- 8 ppm made by Andrew's group
- 2 ppm made by James' group
