Procedures

Complete Exfoliated Clay Film Synthesis

Procedure detailed by Dr Hartings

  1. Warm 150mL of Sodium Sulfate Solution at 80C for 15 minutes
  2. Place film in Sodium Sulfate Solution at 80C for 1 hour with gentle stirring
  3. Warm 150mL of 1% HCl at 80C for 15 minutes
  4. Place film in 1% HCl Solution at 80C for 30 minutes with gentle stirring
  5. Place film in Sodium Bicarbonate Solution for 15 minutes at room temperature with gentle stirring

Complete NaMT Cation Exchange

Continued from 9/10/2014

  1. Centrifuge: 4000 rpm, 30 min, 4°C
    • Solution starting weight: 27.45 g
    • Collect supernatant first time
    • Wash with H2O
    • Wash with EtOH
    • Wash with H2O
    • Wash with EtOH
  2. Dry in oven at 90C overnight
  3. Grind with a mortar and pestle
  4. Store in a dessicator

UV-vis Measurements

  • Dilute 200 ppm solutions 100x
    • (1/1)(V)=(1/100)(10mL)
    • V= 100 uL in 10 mL
  • Dilute 80 ppm solutions 50x
    • (1/1)(V)=(1/50)(10mL)
    • V= 200 uL in 10 mL
  • Take UV-vis of diluted solutions and 8 and 2 ppm solutions
