Steve Koch 01:54, 18 August 2009 (EDT): That was a lot of fun looking at those samples today and puzzling over the DIC. It's still a bit of a mystery to me why bare glass is darker than lipid in DIC, but I think it's due to overall light reflection, not DIC effects. I was pretty convinced after all the fun and games that most of the sample was covered with a nice layer of lipid of ___ nm thickness. They seemed pretty thick, though. And I don't understand the corrals and why the lipids seemed so thick, but uniform...In any case, I got a "pleasant" (ha ha taco bell) feeling from the majority of the sample, and seeing the light / heat induced healing of the sample was pretty cool as well.
