First Day : Making stock solutions

  • We prepared 100 ml 3 wt % bentonite solution; 97 ml water + 3 grams bentonite
  • The original procedure for bead synthesis requires 50 ml ethyl actetate for 10 ml solution . we will use 100 ml ethyl actetate for 30 ml solution.
  • The original procedure added glutaraldehyde (crosslinking agent) twice , we will add less glutaraldehyde but also in two steps (1.5 ml each )

The full, finalized procedure for the beads synthesis we will use throughout the semester can be found below:

  • Make 100mL 3% bentonite solution.
  • 97mL of water w/ 3g bentonite.
  • Make 10% Beads
  • Create a solution of PVOH, bentonite solution, water, and HCl.
  • 1.25g PVOH, 5 mL bentonite solution, 15mL HCl, 35mL water
  • Place this solution on a hot plate and heat at 70 degrees and stir at 240 until everything has dissolved (for 30 mins).
  • Add 30 mL of this solution to a 100 mL solution of ethyl acetate in a dropwise manner stirring at 380 rpm.
  • Add 1.5 mL of glutaraldehyde and stir at 260 rpm for 3 minutes.
  • Add 1.5 mL of glutaraldehyde and stir at 260 rpm for 7 minutes.
  • Make 25% Beads
  • Same procedure as above with these amounts:
  • 1.25g PVOH, 13 mL bentonite solution, 15mL HCl, 27mL water

We will prepare 10, 25 and 40 percent clay bead solutions, using PVOH as polymer. The procedures can found below:
