Project Background

Synthetic Biology is a multidisciplinary field that involves the integration of knowledge from Biology, Chemistry and Engineering; with the aim of designing and engineering new biologically based parts, devices and systems as well as the redesign of existing natural biological systems. There is a large range of applications that Synthetic Biology can or will be able to have an impact on in the future. It can solve problems and tackle challenges for which the current technology is insufficient, whilst using renewable and potentially low-carbon biological materials.(A Synthetic Biology Roadmap for the UK, 2012)
