Beads formation with 30% clay

  • Making the solution of 1.25 g PVOH, 17.325 mL of 3wt% clay, 15 mL 12.1M HCl, 22.675 mL of H2O
    • Mass of PVOH: 1.2502 g
    • Mass of clay: 1.25/7*3 = 0.5357 g
    • Volumn of clay: 0.5357*100/3 ~ 17.321 mL ~ Measured: 17.325 mL
    • Volumn of HCl: 15 mL
    • Volumn of water: 55 - 17.325 - 15 = 22.675 mL
  • Repeat following this protocol
    • Higher stirring speed required

Beads formation with 40% clay

  • Making solution of 1.25 g PVOH, 27 mL bentonite 3wt%, 15 mL HCl, 13 mL H2O
    • Mass of PVOH: 1.2506 g
    • Volumn of bentonite solution: 27 mL
      • Mass of clay needed: 1.25/6*4 = 0.8333 g
      • Volumn of bentonite 3wt% needed: 0.8333*100/3 = 26.944 mL ~ 27 mL
    • Volumn of HCl: 15 mL
    • Volumn of water: 55 - 15 - 27 = 13 mL
  • Repeat following this protocol
    • Higher stirring speed required

Putting beads in column

  • Weighing the columns (data from Dominique's notes)
Column Volumes (g)
Activated Carbon 10%
Empty Dry with Clamp 20.1234 20.1105
Clamp 4.13733 4.1437
Empty Dry 15.98607 15.9668
Empty Wet 16.38975 16.3416
Beads in Column with Clamp 22.3344 21.95
Column with Beads 18.19707 17.8063
Beads 1.8075 1.4647

Note

  • It's important to keep the molar equivalence of HCl in the beads constant.
