FCKEDIT

What is it?

FCKEDIT is an open-source javascript-based HTML full-text editor. The authors have recently created an extension for MediaWiki that allows it to be deployed as the default editor for MediaWiki documents. All HTML is converted to MediaWiki WikiText. No HTML is stored. Anyone can read docs created with it.

Issues

  • The extension allows users to configure this to be on or off
    • You can select whether "rich text editing" is enabled in the preferences page (when installed).
    • We will initially deploy with this extension turned off.
  • Inserting images is challenging
    • must first upload the image to OWW before it can be included
    • drop-down list of all images is provided
  • Inserting MW links works in a similar manner
    • drop-down list of all page titles is presented.
  • Browser Support
    • No current support for Opera
    • Little testing done with Safari

Comments

Despite some drawbacks, this makes for a compelling upgrade to the current OWW editor.

  • Austin Che 11:49, 6 December 2007 (CST): Why no Opera support? According to http://www.fckeditor.net/ v.2.5 is Safari and Opera compatible.
    • Ricardo Vidal 11:59, 6 December 2007 (CST) I think it is the extension that is not supported, could that be right?
