The medium is prepared according to Ian Probert's K/2(-Tris-Si) recipe. Seawater is collected at point B in the bay of Villefranche, filtered on a 10 µm filter and stored in 60 l tanks. Solutions are prepared in Antoine Sciandra's lab and stored in the fridge there. The 20 l Nalgene tanks are rinsed with tap water, distilled water and finally MilliQ water. The seawater is filtered on a 0.2 µm filter and transfered to the Nalgene tanks. Then the different solutions, except the vitamin solution, are added to the filtered seawater. This is the recipe for 40 l. The alternative solutions mentioned are solutions which are already present in Antoine Sciandra's lab.

solutions

to 39.780 l filtered seawater add

20 ml NaNO3 solution (48.9642 g per l H2O)
20 ml KH2PO4 solution (4.8992 g per l H2O)
20 ml FeEDTA solution
20 ml trace metal solution
40 ml f/2 vitamin solution

FeEDTA solution

to 950 ml distilled H2O add

4.3 g (Na)FeEDTA

trace metal solution

to 950 ml distilled H2O add

37.22 g Na2EDTA.2H2O
1 ml CuSO4 solution (2.497 g per l H2O)
or 1.02 ml solution (2.45 g per l H2O)
1 ml Na2MoO4.2H2O solution (7.2585 g per l H2O)
or 1.15 ml solution (6.3 g per l H2O)
1 ml ZnSO4.7H2O solution (23.0 g per l H2O)
or 1.05 ml solution (22.0 g per l H2O)
1 ml CoSO4.7H2O solution (14.055 g per l H2O)
1 ml MnCl2.4H2O solution (178.11 g per l H2O)
or 0.99 ml solution (180 g per l H2O)
1 ml H2SeO3 solution (1.29 g per l H2O)
here we used 1.11 g per l H2O SeO2
1 ml NiCl2.6H2O solution (1.49 g per l H2O)

f/2 vitamin solution

to 950 ml distilled H2O add

1 ml B12 solution (0.5 g per l H2O)
1 ml Biotin solution (5.0 mg per l H2O)
100 mg Thiamine HCl
