Bomb Calorimetry
The purpose of this experiment was to understand the fundamentals of using a bomb calorimeter, and measure a standard curve of temperature change of benzoic acid.
Materials
The materials of this experiment were as follows:
- Benzoic acid (premade pellets)
- Oxygen cylinder
- Isothermal bomb calorimeter
- 25°C water bath
- 2L volumetric flask
- 1mL pipet
Procedure
We used the following procedure: "Bomb calorimetry: The energy concent of pizza" Stout, Roland P.; Nettleton, Faith E.; Price, Lynn M. J. Chem. Educ. 1985, 62, 438-439.

PCR
The purpose of this experiment was to learn some of the basics of polymerase chain reactions (PCR) and gel electrophoresis. This procedure simulates a crime scene investigation and allows us to analyze the genotypes of several DNA samples: one from a hypothetical crime scene and four from hypothetical suspects.
Materials
For a complete materials list refer to:
PCR
- Suspect DNA (A,B,C,D)
- Crime scene DNA
- Thermal cycler
Procedure
The purpose of this procedure to use PCR to amplify DNA from a 'crime scene.'
Protocol is listed as in: "Crime Scene Investigator: PCR Basics™ Kit". Biotechnology Explorer™. Bio--Rad Laboratories, Inc.
