Potential Assignments

Semester or ongoing

  • Possible activity: assign students to conduct some type of observations during the semester. Could be as simple as measuring trees in Circle Park to keeping track of phenology events for NPN. Students might learn more by first doing observations without instruction or protocols, trying to analyze the data in class, and then repeating the observations with a protocol. The protocol could even be developed by the students later in the semester.

Single topic

  • Using the skills learned in information literacy and seeking, find 3 information tools that could be used to solve problem X. (alternate: tools used in the students field of interest) Using information available via the internet and library databases describe the users of the tool, the problems the tool was meant to solve, whether the tool is still actively used by the community of scientists in the relevant discipline, and how well the tool might solve problem X. Write up a one-page report on each tool you found.
