Notes for June 10, 2010

  • Note: This entry has been retroactively made on June 11, 2010.

Resources searched with search terms and hit count

  1. Resource: ISI Web of Science Search term(s): treebase Field: cited work Results: 3
  2. Resource: ISI Web of Science Search term(s): treebase Field: cited author Results: 5
  3. Resource: Scirus Search term(s): treebase Limit: all of the words Field: entire document Results: 4,186
  4. Resource: Scirus Search term(s): treebase, study accession Limit: all of the words Field: entire document Results: 1,533
  5. Resource: Scirus Search term(s): "study accession" "from treebase" Limit: all of the words Field: entire document Results: 100
  6. Resource: Scirus Search term(s): "study accession" "from treebase" ANDNOT (deposited, uploaded) Limit: all of the words Field: entire document Results: 98

Observations

  • Since the intial "treebase" search in Scirus had such a large amount, found a couple of articles that did cite treebase using the term "study accession."
  • Many articles found using last search in Scirus mostly had articles where the author(s) had deposited their findings in TreeBASE, as opposed to articles that had reused said data. Attempts to use Boolean operator "ANDNOT" only eliminated two of the 100 initial hits.
  • When running searches to confirm that the original data is hosted on TreeBASE, must search using "LegacyID" as opposed to "StudyID" because "StudyID" is for current, ongoing studies and "LegacyID" is for published data (as observed by this blogger). This slight shift in the numbers might pose a challenge for data reuse. If a researcher cites the "LegacyID" and another researcher searches for it under the "StudyID" field, they will receive no data.
  • These searches were conducted prior to conversation on June 11, 2010 with Heather where we decided to limit the search to articles from 2008 onward in English only.

Next Steps

  • Refine search further to exclude articles where TreeBASE is hosting original data and to find more articles where data from TreeBASE is reused and cited.
