●Background
Recently, numerous biomolecular devices have been developed and they are expected to be integrated into intelligent molecular systems. Usually, these systems are designed to attain fixed outcomes, for example, a cure of disease.

However, the conventional design principle, in which engineers settle the target’s outcomes, can not deal with the problems of which the best answers differ among people, such as beauty, fashion, love, and so on.

Here, we propose a cosmetic biomolecular system for aiming at expanding the relationship between users and engineers in biomolecular systems design.
We hope that our molecular system will introduce the higher order of flexibility to biomolecular systems engineering.
●Goal
The goal of our project is to develop a “user-friendly” system in the molecular world. Here, we define the user-friendly system as the system that allows its users to choose the system’s behavior according to their preference. In this project, we set a cosmetic-oriented biomolecular system as our target system since the ideal cosmetics are expected to suit a wide range of users’ tastes.
Our cosmetic biomolecular system consists of two functional subsystems, the “UV-Tuning Nano-Parasol” system and the “Controllable Optical Makeup” system. The UV-Tuning Nano-Parasol system functions as a cell-scale sunshade to keep the level of suntan condition according to the user-defined threshold of UV exposure. And the Controllable Optical Makeup system provides a novel category of colors for makeup and allows users to easily choose and change their makeup according to TPO. In contrast to the conventional cosmetic products, which can take only a limited range of users’ fancies, our molecular system provides users with both tunable suntan condition and controllable decorative colors to satisfy their need.

A parasol protects your skin from UV light. Similarly, our biomolecular system shades UV light as a nano-scale parasol. Moreover, the nano-scale parasol is designed to autonomously operate only when the amount of UV exposure exceeds the predefined threshold. By tuning the threshold of UV exposure, you can keep your skin at your favorite suntan condition.

A structural color is the color developed by interference effects rather than by light absorbance of pigments. The opal-like crystal structure formed by this system glows the opal-like structural color. You may use this novel category of colors for lighting up any part of your face and body. It would give you a totally new and innovative makeup!
