Aug 29-Completing film synthesis

Objective

Completing film synthesis, starting new film synthesis, and making stock Malachite green solutions.

Description

  • (A)Completing film synthesis
  • Warm 150mL of Sodium Sulfate Solution (see below for details) at 80C for 15 minutes
  • Place film in Sodium Sulfate Solution (see below for details) at 80C for 1 hour with gentle stirring
  • Warm 150mL of 1% HCl at 80C for 15 minutes
  • Place film in 1% HCl Solution (see below for details) at 80C for 30 minutes with gentle stirring
  • Place film in Sodium Bicarbonate Solution for 15 minutes at room temperature with gentle stirring
  • (B)Start new film synthesis using the "Synthesis of films procedure" found on entry 8.27.14

  • Malachite Green Solutions
  • 25mL 0.20ppm Malachite Green
  • 25mL 0.50ppm Malachite Green
  • 25mL 1.1ppm Malachite Green
  • 25mL 1.4ppm Malachite Green
  • 25mL 1.7ppm Malachite Green
  • 50mL 2.0ppm Malachite Green
  • 50mL 8.0ppm Malachite Green
  • 50mL 80.0ppm Malachite Green
  • 50mL 200.0ppm Malachite Green My group (AMT) prepared the solutions for the 0.20ppm and 0.50ppm Malachite Green from a 200ppm stock solution. The rest of the solutions were prepared by other groups in CHEM581.
  • Take a UV-Visible spectrum of the 0.2ppm to 8ppm standards
  • Make a standard curve to determine the molar absorptivity of Malachite Green
  • Two sets are to be prepared; each set includes a different kind of film (Polymer and Polymer+Clay). The weights of the films should be recorded as well.

Data

Stock Solutions were prepared by Dr. Hartings

  • 0.2M Sodium Sulfate Solution
  • Dissolved 22.034g of anhydrous Na2SO4 in 1000mL of water
  • Added 100mL of concentrated H2SO4 to this solution
  • This solution will be used to enable the reaction between polyvinyl alcohol and glutaraldehyde in order to cross link the polymer film

2. 1% wt. HCl Solution

  • Added 10mL of concentrated HCl to 985mL of water
  • This solution will be used to enable the reaction between polyvinyl alcohol and glutaraldehyde in order to cross link the polymer film

3. 0.2M Sodium Bicarbonate Solution

  • Dissolved 17.042g of NaHCO3 in 1000mL of water
  • This solution will be used to neutralize the acid in your films

Notes and calculations

1.Malachite green solutions ppm (mass/mass)

Stock solution ; 200ppm = 0.02%

  • Weigh 0.02g malachite green to 100g water
  • Using M1V1=M2V2

The mL of stock solution needed = final mL x the solution concentration / stock solution concentration

  • Ex: ssn = 25 x 0.20/200 = 0.025 mL stock

  • 0.025 mL to 25 mL
  • 0.0625 mL to 25 mL
  • 0.1375 mL to 25 mL
  • 0.175 mL to 25 mL
  • 0.2125 mL to 25 mL
  • 0.500 mL to 50 mL
  • 2.000 mL to 50 mL
  • 20.000 mL to 50 mL

These standards were shared between Chem581, therefore some standards were made in larger amounts. A representative from each group help to prepare the standards. We (AMT) prepared the 0.20 ppm and 0.50 ppm Malachite Green Stock Solutions.

Melvin, Becky, and Eleni prepared the 1.1 ppm and 1.4 ppm Malachite Green Stock Solutions.

James, Jake, and Mary prepared the 8.0 ppm, 80.0 ppm, and 200.0 ppm Malachite Green Stock Solutions. See James's 8/29 Page for their calculations.

      2. 25mL 0.50ppm Malachite Green - made with 0.0625mL of 200.0ppm solution in 24.9375mL water

      4. 25mL 1.4ppm Malachite Green - made with
      5. 25mL 1.7ppm Malachite Green - made with 5.31mL of 8.0ppm solution in 19.69mL water
      6. 100mL 2.0ppm Malachite Green - made with 1mL of 200.0ppm solution in 99.0mL water
      7. 50mL 8.0ppm Malachite Green - made with 2mL of 200.0 ppm solution in 48.0mL water
      8. 50mL 80.0ppm Malachite Green - made with 20mL of 200.0ppm solution in 30.0 mL water
      9. 50mL 200.0ppm Malachite Green - made with 20.00mg of MG in 100mL volumetric flask.


2.Mass of films

Samples of film (polymer-only and polymer+clay) were placed in scintillation vials with MG solutions of differing concentrations. The initial masses and concentrations can be found below in Figure 1.
