Objective

  • Use DSC to analyze beads
  • Hydration test
  • Image analysis to determine particle size

Description

  • More PVA clay beads made
  1. Same protocol used in the past week
  • DSC samples prepared and analyzed
  1. Tzero pans weighed
  2. 3-5 mg of sample weighed onto the pan
  3. each lab member prepared there own sample
  • Hydration Test
  1. ~100 mg of PVA-clay & PVA beads added to 50 mL Falcon tube with 50 g DI water
  2. After a week, the beads are re-weighed to see how much water they adsorbed

Data

  • DSC Parameters
  1. Equilibrate at 20 C
  2. Isotherm for 1.00 min
  3. Ramp 10.000 C/min to 250.00 C
  4. Isothermal for 1.00 min
  5. Ramp 10.000 C/min to 20.00 C
  6. Repeat segment 2
  • Hydration Test
  1. PVA Clay Beads
    1. 0.12511 g beads, 52.2327 g water
    2. 0.126141 g beads, 50.1840 g water
    3. 0.12455 g beads, 50.0621 g water
  2. PVA Beads
    1. 0.12639 g beads, 50.0187 g water
    2. 0.12515 g beads, 50.0760 g water
    3. 0.12662 g beads, 50.1071 g water

Notes

  • DSC measures the transitions
  1. melting crystalline to liquid
  2. glass transition amorphous stuck in place to amorphous to wiggling
