Objective

Add a new syringe to the pump in order to supply glutaraldehyde to the PVA mixture in order to crosslink the PVA polymer beads.

Description

  • Glutaraldehyde must be added to PVA mixture in 1:2 ratio
  • Syringe method is used to piece tygon tubing
  • Tygon tubing with carrier fluid must be long enough such that with a certain flow-rate the PVA and glutaraldehyde may react for 5 min

Data

  • Rates for syringe pumps
    • Red pump: 0.05 mL/min
    • Grey pump: 0.1 mL/min
  • Final Length of tygon tubing: 50.5 cm
    • Diameter of tygon tubing: Calculations for correct length and reaction time of 5 min
    • radius of tubing= 0.0397 cm
      • V = pi*r^2*L
      • (0.05 mL/min*5 min) = 3.14 * 0.00158 cm^2 * L
      • 0.25 mL / (3.14 * 0.00158 cm^2) = L
      • L = 50.5 cm
