Day 21: Making the new solution in preparation for electrodeposition

  • Today is day 21 and we are making our new gold solutions to electro deposit to see if this solution helps the gold stick to the fibers. We used 0.0045 grams of Tryptophan and 0.004 grams of gold to make our new gold solution. We decided to make two samples with one being a 3 to 1 sample and the other being a 6 to 1 sample.

The testing of the pH is as follows:

Initial PH is 3.70 After 140 drops of NaOH after the initial 48 drops That was put in the pH for the 3 to 1 solution was 8.01

Initial pH is 3.13 After 450 drops of NaOH after the initial 48 drops that was put in the pH for the 6 to 1 solution was 8.10

Each were heated for 2 minutes and 30 seconds and a slight color change was produced. Then we went to test the pH of the solutions after they had been heated to ensure stability of the pH.

The pH after the 3 to 1 was heated was 6.44 so it decreased... so an additional 30 drops was added and the pH was now 9.05

The pH after the 6 to 1 was heated was 5.62 so it decreased...so an additional 80 drops was added and the pH was now 8.38

We also made 21 electrodes.

As we heat it is becoming more acidic and their solubility is increasing and which causes the pH to drops.
