Tasks for 3 September 2014

  • Today we started synthesis of two new polymer and polymer-clay films. We also finished making up the films from August 29.
  • Started DSC measurements and FTIR of films

Completing Film Synthesis

Continued from Friday, 8/29/2014<br.> Procedure detailed by Dr Hartings

  • Stir in Sodium Sulfate, 1% HCl, and Sodium Bicarbonate solutions

Beginning New Film Synthesis

Procedure detailed by Dr Hartings

  • Polymer film
    • 1.0077 g of PVA were added to 7 mL of water
  • Polymer-10% Clay Film
    • 1.0012 g PVA and 0.1120 g sodium montmorillonite were added to 7 mL of water
Comments
  • There was systematic error in the procedure today
    • Due to close proximity, the polymer and polymer-clay film crosslinked together when gluteraldehyde was added. This made it very difficult to separate the polymer film without breaking it.
