U represents linear flow velocity in ~~a ~~the control volume ~~in uL~~, L represents the length scale of the flow ~~in um/s ~~and D is the diffusion constant ~~in um<sup>2</sup>/s~~. This number can also be represented as a ratio of diffusive to convective time scales. The units, in a microfluidic setup, for U, L and D are um/s, um/s and um<sup>2</sup>/s respectively.
