Our lab is interested in exploring the fundamental science underlying the preformulation, formulation and manufacturing of drugs and drug/nutraceutical/food products. We collaborate with other academic groups as well as scientists working in industry. Our research has been funded by the National Science Foundation, the United States Department of Agrigulture, and a variety of pharmaceutical companies. Our goal is to attain an improved molecular level understanding of pharmaceutical materials and formulations through the use of high resolution analytical techniques. Of particular interest are water-solid interactions and disordered systems, especially amorphous solid dispersions. Vibrational spectroscopic methods, in conjunction with other techniques such as X-ray diffraction and calorimetry, are used to provide information about the physical state of the solid e.g. crystalline or amorphous, the response of the material to changes in temperature and relative humidity and the nature of drug-drug, drug-excipient and drug-water interactions.
