In 1993 I graduated summa cum laude in Electronic Engineering at the Università degli Studi di Pavia. In 1998 I received the PhD in Bioengineering from the Politecnico di Milano. Since 1994 I am with the Dipartimento di Informatica e Sistemistica of the Università degli Studi di Pavia. From 1999 to 2004 I have been with the department as a researcher. From 2005 to 2011 I was an Assistant Professor of Bioengineering at the Engineering Faculty of the Università degli Studi di Pavia. Since 2011 I am a Professor of Bioengineering at the Engineering Faculty of the Università degli Studi di Pavia.

Since 2007 I am with the Centro interdipartimentale di Ingegneria Tissutale (CIT) of the Università degli Studi di Pavia, where I am the leader of the synthetic biology group and principal investigator of the Synthetic Biology projects. Since 2008 I am the leader of the team that represents the Università degli Studi di Pavia at the iGEM, the main international competition in the field of Synthetic Biology organized and sponsored by MIT, where I was awarded a silver medal (2008) and a gold medal (2009, 2010, 2011) and the Best "Food or Energy" project (2009). In 2009 I received from the city of Pavia a gold medal and the title of citizen who has contributed to augment prestigious of the whole Pavia community for his teaching and research activities (Benemerenza di S. Siro). In 2004 I was cofounder of the Bioinformatics group within the Biomedical Informatics Laboratory of the Dipartimento di Informatica e Sistemistica.

Since 2005 I was involved in the organization of the PhD program in Bioingeenering and Bioinformatics of the Università degli Studi di Pavia and since 2011 I am a member of the professor board. In 2010 I was co-organizer of the first Synthetic Biology school in Italy on behalf of the Gruppo Nazionale di Bioingegneria. In 2011 and 2012 I was member of the scientific commitee of the NETTAB 2011 international workshop. I was responsible for the organization of the 2012 annual meeting of the Population Approach Group Europe (PAGE2012). In January 2012 I was founder of Biomeris, a spin-off of the Universita' degli Studi di Pavia working the Medical Informatics field. I am a member of the governing board since its foundation. I am proponent of another spin-off of the Universita' degli Studi di Pavia, still in definition, that should be working in the field of Synthetic Biology.

My teaching and research activities include: quantitative modelling of dynamical systems, Bayesian estimation, Markov chain Monte Carlo methods, intelligent data analysis using probabilistic techniques, medical decision making, biostatistics, modelling and simulation of metabolic systems (metabolic systems, pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics models, population models), telemedicine systems, bioinformatics and synthetic biology.

Since 1999 I have been taking part to several research projects founded both by National Institution (PRIN, FIRB, Pharmacia-Italia, Fondazione Cariplo) and European Union (BaKE,M2DM). I am the principal investigator of a five-year IMI (Innovative Medicine Initiative) EU project, that involved about ten pharma companies, in which I am also leader of a WP. I am reviewer for many ISI journals and international conferences. Since 2007 I am member of the editorial board of "The Open Medical Informatics Journal" and in 2011-12 of a special issue of the BMC Bioinformatics journal. Since 2011 I am Associate Editor of the "IEEE Transaction on Biomedical Engineering". I am author of more than 170 scientific articles, 46 of them published on International Journals, and I am coinventor of a tumor growth inhibition model used by nearly all the pharma companies involved in the oncodrug development field and included in several educational and commercial software tools such as the SymBiology Matlab toolbox.
