Objective

To make a film containing PVOH/glutaraldehyde, prepare 100% and 50% CEC clay with HdPh3P+, and to prepare Na-MT coated with iron oxide.

Description

PVOH/Glutaraldehyde Film

  1. 0.5 g PVOH was dissolved in 5 mL water on a heated hot plate.
  2. Once dissolved, 0.8% wt Glutaraldehyde solution (1 mL) was added.
  3. The gel was then poured into a plastic dish and was allowed to evaporate over the weekend.

100% CEC Clay Preparation

  • HdPh3P+ = (1-Hexadecyl)triphenylphosphonium Bromide
  1. 0.92 meqv/g surfactant (HdPh3P+, 1.06 g) was added to 2 g of Na-MT in a solution of 25 mL ethanol and 25 mL water.
  2. The clay was left for a week to stir

50% CEC Clay Preparation

  1. Half as much surfactant as was used for the 100% CEC clay (0.53 g) was added to 2 g of Na-MT in a solution of 25 mL ethanol and 25 mL water.
  2. The clay was left to stir for a week.

Na-MT coated iron oxide preparation

  1. 0.75 g FeSO4 (actual mass = 0.83 g), 1.56 g FeCl3 (actual mass = 1.93 g), and 2 g Na-MT (actual mass = 2.18 g) were added to 10 mL distilled water.
  2. 20 mL of 5M NaOH was added dropwise (slowly)
  3. The mixture was filtered.
  4. The product was dried in an oven at 100°C for 3 hours.
  • Mass of filter paper = 0.2098 g

Data

100% CEC Clay Calculations

(0.92 meqv/g surfactant)·(2 g clay)·(1 eqv/1000 meqv)·(1 mol surfactant/1 eqv)·(567.62 g/mol surfactant) = 1.06 g surfactant

5 M NaOH Calculations

5 mol/L · 39.97 g/mol = 199.985 g/L · 0.05 L = 9.99 g NaOH to make a 50 mL stock solution

Notes

  • The pure iron oxide was directly prepared by precipitating iron salts under dropping NaOH, whereas for the composite sample, the clay was added to the iron salts mixture prior to the reaction with NaOH
  • Iron oxide precipitated out immediately upon addition of NaOH.
