Our lab applies systems and synthetic biology to problems in renewable energy, microbial physiology, and infectious diseases. We seek to identify the principles governing the design of living organisms and then apply these principles to guide the design of new and improved organisms for economic, environmental, and medical benefit. Our ultimate goal is to develop a rational design framework for engineering living organisms.  
Our lab studies how cells process information. We are particularly interested in understanding how these decision making processes are encoded within the cell through feedback control.
 
Our current goals are to develop genetic tools for engineering non-model organisms, principally for the production of fuels and enzymes.
