Recent Lab News

11/2017 There have been some unexpected changes to the OpenWetWare platform, affecting the formatting of the Banta Lab Website. We are currently working on addressing these issues. A new website is under development and should be launched soon.

10/2017 The Banta Lab is pleased to welcome another new graduate student into the lab group. Nadim Massad has joined the research group this semester.

9/2017 A paper entitled “Block V RTX domain of adenylate cyclase from Bordetella pertussis: A conformationally dynamic scaffold for protein engineering applications” by Bulutoglu and Banta was published in Toxins as an Invited Review for the Special Issue: Adenylate Cyclase (CyaA) Toxin

9/2017 A paper entitled “Catch and release: Engineered allosterically-regulated β-roll peptides enable on/off biomolecular recognition” by Bulutoglu, Dooley, Szilvay, Blenner and Banta was published in ACS Synthetic Biology.

9/2017 A paper entitled “Block V RTX domain of adenylate cyclase from Bordetella pertussis: A conformationally dynamic scaffold for protein engineering applications” by Bulutoglu and Banta was published in Toxins as an Invited Review for the Special Issue: Adenylate Cyclase (CyaA) Toxin.

9/2017 Congratulations to Yuta Inaba for passing his qualifying exam!

8/2017 Harun Ozbakir successfully defended his PhD thesis, the fifteenth from the Banta group. His thesis was entitled "Engineering Electron Transfer Processes in Oxidoreductases: Applications in Biocatalysis". Congratulations Dr. Ozbakir!

8/2017 Professor Banta and Professor Jin Montclare of NYU co-organized a 2 day Symposium consisting of 4 sessions entitled "Recombinant Type Materials" at the 254th National Meeting of the American Chemical Society in Washington, DC. Professor Banta gave a presentation at the Symposium entitled “Engineering the Calcium-Regulated β-Roll Peptide for Biomaterials Applications”.

Wegman Impressions

One of our undergraduates, Sara Chuang (BS '13) decided to do her best William Wegman impression using herself as the model as opposed to Weimaraners.

Current graduate student Tushar Patel, with his signature baseball hat, Order of the Engineer ring, and Reddit tab.
Current graduate student Kevin Dooley, with his usual ice bucket and legal pad, always gives a welcoming look to all who come with questions.
Lab alum Flora Felsovalyi (PhD '12) in her professional attire and ever-cheery disposition with a maelstrom of microcentrifuge tubes and tube racks surrounding her.
Lab alum Elliot Campbell (PhD '11) seen sporting his typical plaid shirt showing off his lifeblood that kept him awake and (mostly) sane during his research.
Lab alum Oren Shur (PhD '12) with his favorite argyle, surrounded by his army of undergrads reduced to sharing 2 square feet of bench space.
Our fearless advisor, Dr. Scott Banta as seen in the Mudd Building Lobby doing his best impression of a graduate student from memory.
