Steve Koch 01:22, 12 June 2009 (EDT): I could never quite get to the point of completely understanding the image data type, and these kinds of things confused me too. I think the most useful way of thinking about it is that the purple wires are like pointers to areas of memory that store the image data (and all the metadata). And image displays are linked to the area of memory, so they in fact will change any time that area of memory changes? Well, anyway, glad you got it working, and yes destroying is a good idea, because it will decrease the chances of your program crashing.
