Objective

Attempt to synthesize a Terbium Nitrate variant of the Desired POM.

Protocol

  • Added 1.6072 of Potassium precursor to 40 mL of DI water.
  • Added 0.8698 g of Terbium Nitrate pentahydrate to 20 mL of DI water.
  • Combined the two solutions above and adjusted the pH to 3.5 using 1 M NaOH.
  • Refluxed for 2 hours at 80 °C
  • Cooled solution to room temperature
  • Filtered solution and collected both precipitate and filtrate.
  • Kept filtrate covered over the weekend and left the precipitate to air dry.

Observations

  • Initial solutions were clear and colorless, but upon mixing, a white precipitate formed and the solution became cloudy with (what is likely) suspended solid.
