Objectives

• Acetylate PVOH (MW 22000). The protocol was based on the acetylation carried out on 2012/11/09.
• Soak films in CuSO₄ and NaSO₄ solutions for ISE.

Acetylation of PVOH to Make PVAc

• Three solutions of PVOH and acetic acid (HAc) were prepared at the following mole percentages of HAc to PVOH: 20%, 40%, 60%, and 100%.
• 5-DTAF was added to each solution such that the dye would react with 0.01% of the hydroxide groups of PVOH.

  MW repeating unit of PVOH, [C2H3OH]n: 44.06 g/mol
  1 g PVOH × (1 mol [C2H3OH]n/44.06 g) × (1 mol OH/1 mol [C2H3OH]n) = 0.022696 mol OH/g PVOH

  MW 5-DTAF: 495. 28 g/mol
  0.022696 mol OH × 0.0001 = 2.2696 × 10-6 mol 5-DTAF
  2.2696 × 10-6 mol 5-DTAF × (495.28 g/1 mol 5-DTAF = 0.001124 g 5-DTAF
