Education

  • Senior Undergraduate Biochemistry major at Loyola Marymount University,
    • University Honors Program Member
    • Will graduate with a B.S. degree in Biochemistry in May 2009.
  • I am currently applying to Biochemistry and Molecular Biology graduate schools, and I hope to pursue a Ph.D. in Fall 2009.

Research Projects

Analysis of the Transcriptional Response to Cold in Yeast May 2007 – Present

Research Advisor: Dr. Kam D. Dahlquist

Department of Biology, Loyola Marymount University

  • Generated DNA microarray gene expression data for Δcin5 yeast strain in a cold-shock time course experiment
  • Performed extensive microarray data analysis using GenePix, Excel, R and EDGE computer software Sample Notebook Log
  • Explored the literature for Cin5p target genes and general transcription factor resources Yeast Transcription Factors Resources
  • Utilized Northern Blot and RT-PCR techniques as additional methods to study gene expression
  • Proposed and personally optimized various techniques and methods for data collection and analysis
  • Presented research at undergraduate and graduate-level research conferences
  • Worked full-time for two summers and part-time for two academic years performing research in the lab
  • Currently writing both a senior thesis and draft for publication

Analysis of Hydrocarbon Pollutants in the Los Angeles Area January 2008 – May 2008

Research Advisor: Dr. Lambert Doezema

Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, Loyola Marymount University

  • Collected and analyzed gas chromatography spectra to analyze atmospheric samples
  • Collaborated with lab group members to determine most useful sites for sample collection
  • Learned analytical chemistry methodology

Heritability of Age-related Macular Degeneration September 2006 – May 2007

Research Advisor: Dr. Michael Danciger

Department of Biology, Loyola Marymount University

  • Carried out PCR reactions and gel electrophoresis
  • Maintained mice cages weekly, recording all observations
  • Performed routine lab maintenance
  • Aided senior research projects in vision genetics in mice
  • Presented current literature to lab group in weekly journal club meetings
  • Project served as an introduction to scientific research at the collegiate level
