OBJECTIVES

  1. Label and remove previous PVOH films from Teflon dishes
  2. Select two types of PVOH for viscosity testing and measurements
  3. Complete viscosity calculations and graphing

Viscosity Preparations and Calculations

Creating Stock Solutions:

  • In 600mL beaker, add 200mL of H2O and ~ 2 grams PVOH (MW 22K) with a large magnetic stir bar

(Initial Mass = 2.0256g)

  • Heat and stir solution for ~ 45 minutes at 100 - 120°C
  • Over a period of ~ 30 minutes, add an additional ~ 5 grams of PVOH (MW 22K) to solution, stirring frequently to limit frothing

(Total Mass In Solution = 7.0158g) (Concentration = 638μM)

  • When PVOH thoroughly dissolves, transfer solution to 500mL volumetric flask to cool to room temperature
  • After cooling, add more water to the volumetric flask to bring solution to volume

* Repeat the entire process again; however use PVOH (MW 130K)

(Initial Mass = 2.0342g) (Total Mass In Solution = 7.0545g) (Concentration = 109μM)

Dilution Standards for Stock Solutions PVOH:

  • In 5 separate 50mL volumetric flasks, select and create various dilute PVOH (MW 22K) solutions for viscosity testing
  • After creating dilute samples, begin testing the viscosity rates by pouring one solution, ~ 15mL, into a viscometer

(Dilute Sample Concentrations PVOH (MW 22K) = 79.7μM, 159μM, 319μM, 478μM)

  • Using vacuum pump, suck up a solution into the viscometer until it reaches the top line of the first bulb on viscometer
  • Once the solution surpasses the second line on the first bulb, begin timing to measure viscosity rate of the solution
  • Take three readings for each solution, then average the time trials

* Repeat the entire process again; however use PVOH (MW 130K) stock solution

(Dilute Sample Concentrations PVOH (MW 130,000) = 13.6μM, 27.1μM, 54.3μM, 81.4μM)

Notes

  • Pure H2O was used as a standard for establishing a viscosity rate for a pure substance
  • Pure H2O was also used as a cleaning agent between trials
  • During the first two trials for the PVOH (MW 22K), the viscometer was accidentally not cleaned between trials
