Notes for June 23, 2010

  • Valerie Enriquez 10:26, 23 June 2010 (EDT): As per yesterday's notes, will review past searches and create new spreadsheet quantifying hits and misses. Will also wrap up ORNL DAAC searches today.

Observations

  • Valerie Enriquez 11:43, 23 June 2010 (EDT): First search more or less matched initial search. However, perhaps I am narrowing things down with Scirus too soon since most of what I'm finding are still "misses." See also: the new spreadsheet I will attempt to upload to Google docs today.
  • Valerie Enriquez 14:36, 23 June 2010 (EDT): The percentage of hits vs. misses in Google Scholar is particularly low. Then again, the Scirus search by repository mention did not fare well either. Link to new search spreadsheet
  • Valerie Enriquez 15:05, 23 June 2010 (EDT): For the "Beck R*" search, all hits cited an article with the primary author listed as "Higdon JR" that uses the data from the Beck R dataset here (S2376)
  • Valerie Enriquez 15:31, 23 June 2010 (EDT): Ran search for citations of set of FLUXNET data stored in ORNL DAAC based on DOI, author name or mention of project name in Google Scholar.

  • Valerie Enriquez 16:16, 23 June 2010 (EDT): Overlap of one hit from first search with second. Also, overlap of previous search on 6/21/2010 Four articles found as misses were by a researcher named Falge, but with a different article/study and the following citation:

  • Valerie Enriquez 16:26, 23 June 2010 (EDT): Three overlapping results from search #2 found in search #3. This third search was specific enough to find all hits (omitting overlap). It seems that looking for an author name in conjunction with a project name will find a citation, but more often than not, the repository in which the data is stored is not mentioned . There are mentions of FLUXNET, but not that the data is stored on ORNL DAAC.
