Xylene cyanol is most commonly used as an agarose gel electrophoresis size marker. It runs alongside different DNA length markers depending on the % of the agarose gel (while it's own molecular weight is around 540g/mol).

- 4000 bp at 1.5%
- 750 bp at 2.0%
- 200 bp at 3.0%
