Sept 19 - Film Absorbance of Arsenic and Mercury

  • Group Members Andrew Farag Sr (Undergrad) and Michael Bible Jr (Undergrad)
  • Group Name : AMT

Objective

  1. Finish analyzing PVA-malachite green data
  2. Start analysis on X-ray
  3. Start making new PVA and PVA clay films
  4. Set up experiments (like the malachite green experiments) to see how well the films absorb arsenic and mercury
    1. Notes: both of these are toxic metals, and we need to understand how to use/work with them.
      1. You MUST read the following before starting in lab today
      2. Information sheet on As
      3. Information sheet on Hg
      4. Note: Both metals are volatile. You MUST only work on solutions of these in the hood. If you take solutions of these out of the hood, they must be in sealed containers. Also, any container that has As or Hg in it must be rinsed (and the rinse must go into the waste containers).

Description

For your Hg and As experiments, you need to have three concentrations: 150ppm, 100ppm, and 50ppm.

Calculations

To make 50, 100, and 150 ppm solutions of Mercury and Arsenic, the following calculations were done.

V1*Conc.1=V2*Conc.2

Making 50 mL Hg solutions from Dr. Hartings's 268 ppm Hg stock solution:

  • (50 mL)*(50ppm) = (x)*(268ppm)
    • x = [(50 mL)*(50 ppm)]/(268ppm) =9.32 mL of Hg Stock Solution
  • (50 mL)*(100ppm) = (x)*(268ppm)
    • x = [(50 mL)*(100 ppm)]/(268ppm) =18.66 mL of Hg Stock Solution
  • (50 mL)*(150ppm) = (x)*(268ppm)
    • x = [(50 mL)*(150 ppm)]/(268ppm) =27.98 mL of Hg Stock Solution

Making 50 mL As solutions from 0.0499 M Arsenite solution:

Converting from M to ppm:

(0.0499 mol Arsenite/L Arsenite)*(74.922 g Arsenic/mol of Arsenite)*(1000 mg Arsenic/1 g Arsenic) = 3738.61 mg/L = 3738.61 ppm

  • (100 mL)*(50ppm) = (x)*(3738.61ppm)
    • x = [(50 mL)*(50 ppm)]/(3738.61ppm) =4.00 mL of Arsenite Stock Solution
  • (100 mL)*(100ppm) = (x)*(3738.61ppm)
    • x = [(50 mL)*(100 ppm)]/(3738.61ppm) =2.76 mL of Arsenite Stock Solution
  • (100 mL)*(150ppm) = (x)*(3738.61ppm)
    • x = [(50 mL)*(150 ppm)]/(3738.61ppm) =1.32 mL of Arsenite Stock Solution

Eleni for prepared the Arsenic solutions.
