Aug 27- Synthesis of films
- Group Members Andrew Farag Sr (Undergrad) and Michael Bible Jr (Undergrad)
- Group Name : AMT
Objective
- Starting synthesis for both polymer and polymer-clay films
Description
- Starting materials were prepared by Dr. Hartings according to his lab notebook. Perform the following procedures (A and B) in parallel for the start to the synthesis of cross-linked polymer and cross-linked polymer-clay films. This procedure is repeated weekly and will be refered to as the 'Synthesis of flims procedure'.
- 1.Add 7mL of water to 1.0041 g of 22,000MW polyvinyl alcohol and 0.11g of sodium montmorillonite in a glass vial
- 2.Stir the solution with constant heating at 75C until the polymer is dissolved and the clay is dispersed (~15 minutes)
- 3.Cool the solution to room temperature
- 4.Add 0.5mL 0.8 wt% glutaraldehyde.
(NOTE: Perform step 4 in the hood)
- 5.Stir for an additional 3 minutes to ensure homogeneity
- 6.Pour solution into a teflon dish to dry until the next class
- 1.Add 7mL of water to 1.0030 g of 22,000MW polyvinyl alcohol in a glass vial
- 2.Stir the solution with constant heating at 75C until the polymer is dissolved (~15 minutes)
- 3.Cool the solution to room temperature
- 4.Add 0.5mL 0.8 wt% glutaraldehyde.
(NOTE: Perform step 4 in the hood )
- 5.Stir for an additional 3 minutes to ensure homogeneity
- 6.Pour solution into a teflon dish to dry until the next class
