Research interests
My research interests are in Plant Evolution, especially adaptive divergence and speciation. I have focused on the genetic and evolutionary consequences of interspecific hybridization in the genus Senecio with particular emphasis on the origins and evolution of three recently originated hybrid species and one stabilised introgressant. These are: (i) the homoploid hybrid species, Senecio squalidus (Oxford ragwort), (ii) the allohexaploid, Senecio cambrensis (Welsh groundsel), (iii) the allotetrapolid, Senecio eboracensis (York radiate groundsel), and (iv) the stabilised introgressant, Senecio vulgaris var. hibernicus (Radiate groundsel). All four originated in the UK during the last 300 years and are excellent models for the study of hybrid evolution.
I collaborate on Senecio research with labs run by Simon Hiscock (Bristol University), Adrian Brennan (Durham University), Mark Chapman (Southampton University), Andrew Lowe (Adelaide University), Joachim Kadereit (Mainz University), Peter Comes (Salzburg University), and Matt Hegarty (Aberystwyth University).
I also investigate the historical biogeography of plant species occupying arctic, alpine, mediterranean and temperate habitats. My research is at the interface of population genetics and molecular systematics, and encompasses the study of adaptation, population divergence, speciation, mating system evolution, reproductive isolation, and trait development.
I have a long-standing collaboration with Professor Jian-Quan Liu (Lanzhou University, China) to investigate the phylogeography and speciation of forest trees and alpine plants in China.
