Objective

  1. Begin bead synthesis
  2. Determine which method works best to cross link beads

Description

Procedure

  • Weigh out approximately 1.0000g of PVA and 0.1100g of clay
  1. 1.0004g of PVA and 0.1100g of clay
  • This is mixed with 7mL of 10% of HCl. The HCl should not react with the acetone.
  • Using a burette, 100mL of acetone:7.14mL of of gluteraldehyde are added. Drops of the PVA and clay mixture will be added in order to create beads. The burette will allow a longer time to elapse for the beads to cross link with the gluteraldehyde.
  • Using a pasteur pipette, the PVA and clay mixture will be added drop wise into the burette with acetone and gluteraldehyde.
  • When dropping the mixture into the burette, beads did not form. Some clumped together in an obscure ball and took the shape of a thinker and whispy fiber. It almost looked like a thinker floss.
  • Because acetone was not sufficient to create beads, so it was replaced with hexane. Hexane with a couple drops of glutaraldehyde was added to a petri dish and drops of the PVA and clay mixture were added. This created beads. However if the beads touched each other, they would clump together to create a big bead.
  • Time must elapse in order for one to take the beads out so that they do not clump together.
