Objective

Completing film synthesis, starting new film synthesis, and making stock Malachite green solutions.

Description

  1. Completing film synthesis
    1. Warm 150mL of Sodium Sulfate Solution (see below for details) at 80C for 15 minutes
    2. Place film in Sodium Sulfate Solution (see below for details) at 80C for 1 hour with gentle stirring
    3. Warm 150mL of 1% HCl at 80C for 15 minutes
    4. Place film in 1% HCl Solution (see below for details) at 80C for 30 minutes with gentle stirring
    5. Place film in Sodium Bicarbonate Solution for 15 minutes at room temperature with gentle stirring
  2. Starting new film synthesis
    1. Use Dr. Hartings' Wednesday's Procedure to make new 10% clay-polyvinyl alcohol film
      1. It was 10% by weight clay because we used 1g of PVA and 0.11g of clay

I prepared two new polymer films using the following quantities of reactants:

  • PVA weight-1.0029g (Polymer only)
  • PVA weight-1.0038g (Polymer and clay)
  • Na montmorillonite-0.1105g
  1. Malachite Green Solutions
    1. We need to make the following solutions
      1. 25mL 0.20ppm Malachite Green
      2. 25mL 0.50ppm Malachite Green
      3. 25mL 1.1ppm Malachite Green
      4. 25mL 1.4ppm Malachite Green
      5. 25mL 1.7ppm Malachite Green
      6. 50mL 2.0ppm Malachite Green
      7. 50mL 8.0ppm Malachite Green
      8. 50mL 80.0ppm Malachite Green
      9. 50mL 200.0ppm Malachite Green
        1. My group prepared the solutions for the 0.20ppm and 0.50ppm Malachite Green from a 200ppm stock solution. The rest of the solutions were prepared by other groups in the lab section. Matt Hartings you need to link to who made those solutions. You also need to state how you made your solutions AND how the other groups made theirs
    2. Take a UV-Visible spectrum of the 0.2ppm to 8ppm standards.
    3. Make a standard curve to determine the molar absorptivity of Malachite Green

Data

Stock Solutions

  1. 0.2M Sodium Sulfate Solution
    1. Dr. Hartings dissolved 22.034g of anhydrous Na2SO4 in 1000mL of water
    2. Dr. Hartings added 100mL of concentrated H2SO4 to this solution
    3. This solution will be used to enable the reaction between polyvinyl alcohol and glutaraldehyde in order to cross link the polymer film
  2. 1% wt. HCl Solution
    1. Dr. Hartings added 10mL of concentrated HCl to 985mL of water
    2. This solution will be used to enable the reaction between polyvinyl alcohol and glutaraldehyde in order to cross link the polymer film
  3. 0.2M Sodium Bicarbonate Solution
    1. Dr. Hartings dissolved 17.042g of NaHCO3 in 1000mL of water
    2. This solution will be used to neutralize the acid in your films

The Making of Malachite Green Stock Solutions

We prepared the 0.20 ppm and 0.50 ppm Malachite Green Stock Solutions.

Melvin, Becky, and Eleni prepared the 1.1 ppm and 1.4 ppm Malachite Green Stock Solutions.

Madeleine and Alicia prepared the 1.7 ppm and 2.0 ppm Malachite Green Stock Solutions. See Madeleine's 8/29 Page for their calculations.

James, Jake, and Mary prepared the 8.0 ppm, 80.0 ppm, and 200.0 ppm Malachite Green Stock Solutions. See James's 8/29 Page for their calculations.

Calculations

Our calculations for the dilution of the stock solution to solutions 25 mL of 0.20 ppm and 0.50 ppm are as follows: Conc1*V1 = Conc2*V2

  • .20ppm
    • (.20ppm)(25mL)=(200.0ppm)*V
    • V=0.025mL of 200.0ppm solution in 24.975mL water
  • 0.5ppm
    • (0.5ppm)(25mL)=(200ppm)*V
    • V=0.0625mL of 200ppm solution in 24.9375mL water
