As a molecular biology specialist with a recently finished PhD in the field of human extracellular matrix, I just entered new terrain of cyanobacterial biotechnology. The focus of my research is the underexplored field of the cyanobacterial programmed cell death (PCD), the process in eukaryotes named apoptosis. With the availability of sequenced genomes of cyanobacteria, comparative analysis was performed and many proteins showing homology with caspases, the mammalian executors of PCD, were identified. By using the available bioinformatic tools in combination with recombinant DNA technologies, we are characterising these proteins, identifying the metabolic paths they are involved in and assessing their potential roles in the control of cyanobacterial regulated cell death.
