Procedures

Completing Film Synthesis from Last Week

  1. Warm 150mL of Sodium Sulfate Solution (see below for details) at 80C for 15 minutes
  2. Place film in Sodium Sulfate Solution (see below for details) at 80C for 1 hour with gentle stirring
  3. Warm 150mL of 1% HCl at 80C for 15 minutes
  4. Place film in 1% HCl Solution (see below for details) at 80C for 30 minutes with gentle stirring
  5. Place film in Sodium Bicarbonate Solution for 15 minutes at room temperature with gentle stirring

Make 10% Exchanged Clay Films

  • From our exchanged clay
    1. Add 7mL of water to 1.0028 g of 22,000MW polyvinyl alcohol and 0.1107 g of exchanged NaMT in a glass vial
    2. Stir the solution with constant heating at 75C until the polymer is dissolved and the clay is dispersed (~15 minutes)
    3. Cool the solution to room temperature
    4. Add 0.5mL 0.8 wt% glutaraldehyde.
    5. Stir for an additional 3 minutes to ensure homogeneity
    6. Pour solution into a teflon dish to dry until the next class
  • From MJJ's group exchanged clay
    1. Add 7mL of water to 1.0042 g of 22,000MW polyvinyl alcohol and 0.1101 g of exchanged NaMT (same ion as our group) in a glass vial
