Objective

Today's objective includes the following:

  1. Prepare stock solutions of heavy metals for later testing with bentonite beads
  2. Continue testing the 30% and 40% beads
  3. Make 60% beads

Protocol

Heavy metal stock solutions
We prepared the following stock solutions for bead testing:

  1. 10 mL of 100 ppm of Zn
  2. 10 mL of 100ppm Cu
  3. 10 mL of 100 ppm

Note: These heavy metals can be tested because they are cations and will be attracted to our beads, which are anions. Arsenic, for example, can not be used with bentonite beads because it would be anionic and would not be attracted to our beads because they are also negatively charged.

Testing the 30% and 40% sln bentonite beads
The 30% (sln) and 40% bentonite beads were tested using the same method as that from before.

60% PVA/bentonite bead synthesis
The synthesis of 60% bentonite beads was prepared using the same procedure from the 21st using the following reagents: 50mL of 3% by weight bentonite solution, 18.74mL of conc. HCL, 2.26mLs of DI water.
