Objective

First synthesis of Polymer and Polymer + Clay films.

Protocol

From Dr. Hartings' Notes

  1. Polymer-Clay Films
    1. Add 7mL of water to 1g of 22,000MW polyvinyl alcohol and 0.11g of sodium montmorillonite in a glass vial
    2. Stir the solution with constant heating at 75C until the polymer is dissolved and the clay is dispersed (~15 minutes)
    3. Cool the solution to room temperature
    4. Add 0.5mL 0.8 wt% glutaraldehyde.
      1. NOTE: Perform step 4 in the hood
    5. Stir for an additional 3 minutes to ensure homogeneity
    6. Pour solution into a teflon dish to dry until the next class
  2. Polymer Films
    1. Add 7mL of water to 1g of 22,000MW polyvinyl alcohol in a glass vial
    2. Stir the solution with constant heating at 75C until the polymer is dissolved (~15 minutes)
    3. Cool the solution to room temperature
    4. Add 0.5mL 0.8 wt% glutaraldehyde.
      1. NOTE: Perform step 4 in the hood
    5. Stir for an additional 3 minutes to ensure homogeneity
    6. Pour solution into a teflon dish to dry until the next class

Notes

Actual amounts of reactants

  • 1.0024 g PVOH for polymer film
  • 1.0010 g PVOH + 0.1103 clay for polymer clay + film
  • After 10 minutes of heating at 75 degrees Celsius the temperature was raised to 120 to facilitate dissolving.
