Objective

To conduct clay-CuSO4 exchange, remake films with PDMS and glutaraldehyde, and prepare films containing clay (Na-MT and 100% CEC)

Description

Making films with PDMS and glutaraldehyde

Film 1

  1. 0.5 g of PVOH was dissolved in 5 mL of water and was placed on a hotplate
  2. 1 mL of glutaraldehyde was added to the solution under the hood.
  3. The mixture was allowed to stir for about 3 minutes.
  4. The film was poured into a dish and was left under the hood over the weekend


Film 2

  1. 0.4 g PVOH and 0.1262 g PDMS were dissolved in 5 mL of water on a hot plate.
  2. Once dissolved, 1 mL of glutaraldehyde was added to the PVOH/PDMS
  3. The mixture was allowed to stir without heat for 3 minutes
  4. The film was poured into a dish and was left under the hood over the weekend


Making clay films

Clay Film 1

  1. Weigh out 1 g PVOH (1.068 g actual) and .1 g Na-MT (0.1069 actual)
  2. Dissolve in 6 mL of water in a small beaker with a small stir bar
  3. Place on heated hotplate until it has become a homogenized mixture
  4. Add 1 mL of glutaraldehyde and stir for 3 minutes.
  5. Pour into a small plastic dish and leave under the hood to dry over the weekend

Clay Film 2

  1. Weigh out 1 g PVOH and .1 g 100% CEC surfactant clay
  2. Dissolve in 6 mL of water in a small beaker with a small stir bar
  3. Place on heated hotplate until it has become a homogenized mixture
  4. Add 1 mL of glutaraldehyde and stir for 3 minutes.
  5. Pour into a small plastic dish and leave under the hood to dry over the weekend
