Objective

  1. Complete the film synthesis from Wednesday
  2. Start new film synthesis of both polymer films and polymer-clay films.
  3. Make all Malachite green solutions

Protocol

  • Complete Film synthesis from Wednesday August, 27th
  1. Warm 150mL of Sodium Sulfate Solution at 80C for 15 minutes
  2. Place film in Sodium Sulfate Solution at 80C for 1 hour with gentle stirring
  3. Warm 150mL of 1% HCl at 80C for 15 minutes
  4. Place film in 1% HCl Solution (see below for details) at 80C for 30 minutes with gentle stirring
  5. Place film in Sodium Bicarbonate Solution for 15 minutes at room temperature with gentle stirring
  • Starting new film Synthesis
  1. create a new 10% clay-polyvinyl alcohol film using Wednesdays procedure
  2. create a 5% clay-polyvinyl alcohol film
  • Malachite Green Solutions
  1. 25mL 0.20ppm Malachite Green
  2. 25mL 0.50ppm Malachite Green
  3. 25mL 1.1ppm Malachite Green
  4. 25mL 1.4ppm Malachite Green
  5. 25mL 1.7ppm Malachite Green
  6. 50mL 2.0ppm Malachite Green
  7. 50mL 8.0ppm Malachite Green
  8. 50mL 80.0ppm Malachite Green
  9. 50mL 200.0ppm Malachite Green

Solution Preparation

  • Complete film synthesis
  1. 0.2M Sodium Sulfate Solution
    1. I dissolved 22.034g of anhydrous Na2SO4 in 1000mL of water
    2. I added 100mL of concentrated H2SO4 to this solution
    3. This solution will be used to enable the reaction between polyvinyl alcohol and glutaraldehyde in order to cross link the polymer film
  2. 1% wt. HCl Solution
    1. I added 10mL of concentrated HCl to 985mL of water
    2. This solution will be used to enable the reaction between polyvinyl alcohol and glutaraldehyde in order to cross link the polymer film
  3. 0.2M Sodium Bicarbonate Solution
    1. I dissolved 17.042g of NaHCO3 in 1000mL of water
    2. This solution will be used to neutralize the acid in your films
  • New film synthesis of 10% and 5% clay by weight
  1. Polymer-Clay Films
    1. Add 7mL of water to 1g of polyvinyl alcohol and 0.05g of sodium montmorillonite in a glass vial
    2. Stir the solution with constant heating at 75C until the polymer is dissolved and the clay is dispersed (~15 minutes)
    3. Cool the solution to room temperature
    4. Add 0.5mL 0.8 wt% glutaraldehyde.
    5. Stir for an additional 3 minutes to ensure homogeneity
    6. Pour solution into a teflon dish to dry
  • Malachite green solutions
