Preparation of reproducing workers is achieved as follows: five callow workers (within 24 h of emergence) from the same colony will be marked with numbered tags and kept in their natal colony for 2 additional days. Thereafter, they will be removed from the nest and placed separately with two 1-day-old workers from different donor colonies, creating groups of three queenless workers. Young cocoons will act as a substrate for cell construction. The oldest worker will produce males.
