Objective

  • Prepare heavy metal solutions (Zn, Pb, Cu)

Description

  • Prepare 100mL of 100ppm solutions of Pb, Zn, Cu
  • Cu
100mL*1L/1000mL*100mg Cu/1L*134.45 g/mol CuCl2/63.54 g/mol Cu = 21.16 mg CuCl2
  • Pb
100mL*1L/1000mL*100mg Pb/1L*325.29 g/mol PbAc/207.2 g/mol Cu = 15.7 mg PbAc
  • Zn
100mL*1L/1000mL*100mg Zn/1L*138.315 g/mol ZnCl2/65.38 g/mol Zn = 21.15 mg ZnCl2
  • Prepare 50mL of 300 ppm metals (100ppm Pb, 100ppm Zn, 100ppm Cu)
10.58 mg CuCl2
10.57 mg ZnCl2
7.85 mg PbAc
50mL H2O
  • Dilution to 60ppm
10mL of 300ppm and 40mL water
  • 20% column data:

Dry:15.5904g

Wet: 15.9570g

W/Beads: 16.65g

  • 10% column data

Dry:15.966g

Wet: 16.389g

W/Beads: 17.55g

Ran data analysis on 10% beads with MG

  • Found the Max Absorbance for each run.
  • Using the Beer's Law calibration Curve we found a few weeks ago (y=0.0813x) calculated concentration for each sample.
  • Created plot of concentration vs. Volume Eluted.
  • Calculated the amount of MG added to the Column
54 samples *5mL/sample*1L/1000mL*50mg/1L = 1.75mg
  • Calculated the amount of MG eluted.
From samples 1-54:
5mL*1L/1000mL*concentration of sample = mg of MG not adsorbed
For sample 55:
1mL*1L/1000mL*concentration of sample = mg of MG not adsorbed
4mL*1L/1000mL*concentration of sample = mg of MG desorbed
For samples 56-88:
5mL*1L/1000mL*concentration of sample = mg of MG desorbed
  • Subtract mg of MG not adsorbed from amount of MG added to column to get amount of MG adsorbed by the column.
  • Find capacity of beads by dividing mass of MG adsorbed by mass of beads
  • Find capacity of activated carbon by dividing mass of MG adsorbed by mass of activated carbon in beads.
